Colorado State Mastery Exam
The State changed to an on-line examination in September 2010.  First time dealer, wholesaler, and salesperson applicants (or anyone who was previously licensed but whose licensed is expired over one year) must take and pass this exam with an 85%.  If you are applying for a Dealers or Wholesalers license - the in-person Pre-Licensing Seminar may be required.  Click here for details.

To become a motor vehicle salesperson in Colorado, you must first be hired by a licensed dealer.  The next step is to study and pass the state's Mastery Exam, which can be administered by your dealership, or by an approved third-party examiner (CAPSS or CIADA).  

CAPSS provides two training options to help you pass the Mastery Exam:
  • On-line Seminar available through your PC, laptop or tablet at your convenience
  • In-classroom Pre-Licensing Seminar


These  seminars were developed specifically to prepare you for taking the state's Mastery Exam.  The failure rate on the Mastery Exam is high, especially if the student is not properly prepared in advance.

In these seminars, we guide you through the confusing rules and regulations that you must know to pass the exam.  In both classes, we offer two practice exams, which test your content knowledge and refine your test taking skills in preparation for the exam.  If you take the In-Person Seminar, the Mastery Exam is administered at the conclusion of the seminar.


After you pass the Mastery Exam, you may submit your sales person application to the Colorado Auto Industry Division (fee schedule).  You cannot begin selling until you receive your license!



On-Line Mastery Exam Seminar - $75

The Mastery Exam on-line seminar can be accessed from your PC, laptop, or tablet at your convenience.  Use the below link to register and pay by credit card ($75).   Note:  We have listened to your comments!  Access to this course is now allowed for 14 days for your review.  


This seminar is a study course only.  A student will still need to take the state's Mastery Exam with an approved third party examiner (CAPSS or CIADA), or with a dealership that has signed up and received a password from the Auto Industry Division.

In-Person Pre-Licensing Seminar - $150

  • Price includes lunch, snacks, and the Mastery Exam administration

CAPSS offers in-person Pre-Licensing seminars (8 hour class) that are open to sales personnel.  This class is so much more than just preparing for the Mastery Exam.  The students learn compliance with state and federal laws governing motor and powersport vehicle sales, including Salesperson licensing, Advertising, Repossession, Contracts, Financing, Disclosure Requirements, Truth-in-Mileage, Title Delivery, Damage Disclosure, Salvage Vehicles, Emissions, Credit Applications, the basic car deal paperwork and more.  Dealers can send their sales people to be trained and tested all in the same day.  Sales applicants can strengthen their resumes by attending the training and passing the Mastery Exam.


Note:  You will be able to use a reference manual specifically made to help you pass the state's Mastery Exam (the state test is an open book exam).
